Part 24
Ratchet and Skyfire were in Ratchet's workroom with the door locked, using his computer to go over scans. Skyfire asked, “Ratchet, what exactly are we looking for?”
“We're looking for why that little robot went nuts,” Ratchet explained, zooming in on one of the scans, looking for any small details that could possibly go unnoticed.
“'Went nuts' doesn't even BEGIN to cover it,” Skyfire replied. He just watched Ratchet work, since examining Autobot anatomy for something non-Autobot was not his forte. “You saw what he did to Firefly, even to Elita One. The 'little guy' was strong enough to send her flying.”
“I'm surprised he didn't the little f**ker for that alone,” Ratchet stated, still analyzing the scans.
Skyfire nodded. “He was close. The only time Prime loses his temper is when he is protecting someone else. Justice harmed Firefly AND Elita. I really think ‘that little f**ker,’ as you so nicely put it, is going to be killed if he ever comes back.”
Ratchet was about to reply when he thought he saw something. “Did you see that?”
“Hmm?” Skyfire asked, not having seen anything.
“There's a...blip in his programming,” Ratchet explained. “It shows up black on the screen because it's so strong. Deeply entrenched in his programming.”
“Ratchet, tell me what it means,” Skyfire said. “I'm a scientist, not a medic.”
“It means...” the medic explained, “that there is strong programming in Justice’s mind that should NOT be there.”
“So…Decepticon programming?” Skyfire asked, although it was fairly obvious.
“Yeah,” Ratchet replied. “Put there by someone better than Soundwave. It was probably Shockwave. He’s the only one sick enough to do something like this.” Skyfire was silent, thinking about what they now knew, so Ratchet continued talking. “They turned Justice into a weapon against us, partially without his knowledge. The way they USED their relationship…”
“What, exactly, do you mean by partially? Wouldn’t either know or not know?” Skyfire questioned.
“When he came here, Justice thought he was obeying his promise to Firefly, to follow her. He loves her and that has nothing to do with the ‘Con programming,” Ratchet answered.
“Do you figure his acting like a jerk to be a result of the Decepticon programming or just because he was mad at us?” Skyfire wondered.
“Note, his attitude wasn’t there until he was better. At some point, it was activated. I think it was the first time he touched Firefly. A sensor in his body activated the signal when it recognized her energy signal. They must have counted on him hugging or touching her.” Ratchet finally turned from the computer to speak face-to-face. “When the program was activated, he honestly thought it was all his idea. He absolutely had to bring Firefly back, but I THINK, note that I say I THINK, that the programming gave him an out if he thought he was going to die.”
Skyfire was quite a moment, absorbing this. “But why would it then completely take over?”
“Even without the programming, he REALLY wanted Firefly to come home with him, because he DOES love her. When his thoughts agreed with the programming, all logic went out the window, as the human phrase goes,” Ratchet replied. “Then Optimus literally knocked the sense back into him.”
“Could the sense possibly be…knocked back out?”
Ratchet nodded. “If he gets angry enough, it could. In theory, of course. It's likely that he will come back. If I were more confident, I would say that he definitely will come back. Things may get violent.”
“We definitely need to inform Prime of our, your, findings,” Skyfire concluded. “I mean, if he’s at least half-innocent, isn’t that enough to try to…well…NOT kill him the second we see him again?”
“It won't take much convincing,” Ratchet agreed. “But it WILL be difficult to figure out a way to capture and fix Justice without bodily harm to any involved. Ironhide is likely to shoot him on sight.”
Skyfire replied quickly, “Optimus can talk to him or something. That's not our job to worry about. We just need to tell Prime what we know now, before something happens.”
“I’ll comm him,” Ratchet assured him. “Don’t let any of this slip to Firefly. She’s too upset right now, the poor thing. We’ll tell her eventually.”
“Of course,” Skyfire said.
“Glad you’re with me on that.” Then Ratchet transmitted, “Optimus, we have something you should see.”
“I was hoping you would,” came the reply.

Part 25
Ratchet jumped and Skyfire whirled around quickly, both surprised by Optimus’ voice. Ratchet was the first to gain his wits enough to say something. “Oh, hello Prime. Well, I think I have figured out why Justice was acting so strangely,” began the long explanation and the discussion that followed.
A week later… Outside the compound, Firefly was walking with Bumblebee, working up her strength again. “Tired yet?” ‘Bee asked.
“No, I’m good so far,” she replied. It felt good to finally be outside again in the fresh air. The open space felt so nice and comforting.
“Hey, let’s go find out what that…thing is.” Bumblebee pointed to something that looked similar to a sea turtle Firefly once saw on Animal Planet.
The only thing she said in response was “hmm…” as she curiously peered at the thing. They both walked towards it, and it was actually quite a bit bigger than the turtles either of them had seen before.
“That’s HUGE!” ‘Bee exclaimed. “Check out its armor!” He leaned down for a closer look when, suddenly, the tortoise whirled around and attempted to bite his face off! Bumblebee jumped a mile backwards and screamed like a little girl.
Firefly busted up laughing. “Oh, that was so priceless!” She wouldn’t admit that she had jumped a bit too, even though she was a safe distance away from the thing.
He glared at her. “He surprised me!”
“Uh huh, sure,” Firefly replied sarcastically.
“If I had a tongue, I’d stick it out at you like the humans do.” Then Bumblebee abruptly peered up at the sky. “What the hell is that sound?” He couldn’t see anything but a bunch of fluffy white clouds and the usual blue background of the sky.
Firefly looked up also, seeing… “JUSTICE!!!” Suddenly she was in a panic.
“It is not; you’re seeing things.” He turned back to the giant desert turtle.
“No, I’m not! No, I’m not!” Firefly shrieked. “Look again!!!”
Through all comlinks, Ratchet’s voice announced, “Be aware: Teletraan 1 is picking up something on the radar. Be advised.”
This caused Firefly to be even more panicked, which she didn’t think was possible until that moment. “Bumblebee, we should go inside NOW! Before…”
Justice dropped down shooting, but Bumblebee punched him in the face, using Justice’s own momentum. It was an epic punch borne of the power of the need to protect someone. Justice was sent tumbling, knocked unconscious for the time being. Firefly just stared at the collapsed form on the ground, completely shocked. The twins were watching from the doorway of the compound, and they started to scream unintelligibly.
Bumblebee whirled around and yelled in their direction, “Twins! Get everybody!!!”
They run off screaming, “JUSTICE IS BACK!!! EVERYBODY, COME ON, JUSTICE IS BACK!!!”
It was then that Firefly noticed she had been knocked to the ground with the force of Justice’s landing. ‘Bee was standing over her, thoroughly protective. “Firefly, I knocked him out. Get inside NOW!”
She pushed herself up off the ground and scrambled away, frightened that at any moment, Justice would wake up and do Primus knows what to her and her friends. She stumbled and fell to her knees on the dirty ground, feeling exhausted, dizzy, and in dreadful pain.
It was only moments later that Optimus, Ratchet, Ironhide, Elita One, and Skyfire came running out, while Jazz, Wheeljack, and Chromia stayed behind to defend the base if it came to it. Seeing her friends, Firefly felt a renewed panic that something terrible was going to happen, and she forced herself to get up and keep going, keep running towards base. Her insides were screaming, informing her that she was pushing herself harder than she should have been, but what other choice did she have?
Elita went to Firefly, shielding her in case of an attack. The others lined up in front of them, looking more epic than any picture or lengthy description could give justice to.
Firefly suddenly grew very dizzy, and her legs felt too weak to hold her up any longer. “Elita, I…” and then her legs went out from beneath her. Elita picked up the bot like a child and whispered comfortingly, “Don’t worry, little one. He’s not going to touch you.”
